Work Ethics of Elon Musk

Work Ethics of Elon Musk

Introduction

Elon Musk, the richest man, is considered a super-human. He is the CEO of three companies namely; Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink. He is smarter than the average human beings working on their goals and has enormous ambition and drive. He is also known for a giant 120-hour work schedule in a week and very few people can match his work ethics.

Work Ethics of Elon Musk

1. Build Your Own Dreams
Musk spent most of his time in his childhood days playing video games, reading books, and writing software. He simply couldn’t find a point in scoring an A grade in a subject he wasn’t even interested in. He did not fall for what others were doing rather he stayed away from distractions like jealousy, peer pressure, etc.
Thus, it is better to find the subjects of life which matter to you the most, analyze what you want for yourself, your dreams, and then work towards the achievement of your goals.
2. Life and Work
Elon Musk manages Tesla, SpaceX, and his personal life shuttling between Los Angeles and California. He works for 100-120 hrs a week, and rightly so because you have to work for a lot more than what others do, to take on the world. You have to believe in the impact that your work has and only then, it will seep into the pores of your being and your existence. You then, prefer your life that way instead of complaining that you don’t have a life at all.
Life and Work thus become extensions of each other where you apply whatever you’ve learned from your work into your life and vice-versa. In those ways, you will be able to work and live better.
3. Believe in Yourself
People naturally choose things which they like. Elon picked up the electric cars, rockets, and space stations. He entered ultra-complex businesses and didn’t get bothered even a bit by the fact that he didn’t know much about them.
Elon studied everything about whatever he did. People around him say that he gained so much knowledge by studying that he knew more than the experts. He has a photogenic memory.
You must believe that you can also do whatever you want by learning those things. Time, experience, and books are the best teachers.
4. Decision Making Power
The decision-making power of Elon Musk is one of his strongest abilities which helped him in building such a massive business empire. He has always been very clear in making choices. It’s always either Yes or a straight NO.
Indecisiveness is such a harmful thing that it drags you behind and you may end up losing big opportunities because of it. Don’t let your fears and confusions come in the way of your success.
5. Be Practical
We generally tend to look at things with our spectacles that have the dust of human experience which makes our vision blurred and we can’t look at situations clearly.
Looking at different situations and things as they are and not the way we want to see them is Elon Musk’s another big quality that enables him to reach the core of the problems very soon and with a lot of clarity.
All problems have some solutions. It’s you who have to see it the way it is and then try to solve it reaching its very core.
When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not your favour Elon Musk
6. Be Stubborn
Elon Musk is a stubborn person because he doesn’t accept things just said. He needs the experts to give reasons and justify whatever they say. Everyone including the experts opined that his idea of making rockets reusable or reducing the rocket prices to 1/5th of their general cost was impossible. But he, being stubborn, didn’t listen to them and started doing his research until he proved them wrong. Subjective explanations didn’t work rather scientific reasons were necessary for him with mandatory backup plans.
Hence, do your research and try to know the details. Don’t take a straight no for an answer unless the other person gives you the right logical reasons behind that answer.
7. No Shortcuts
Elon Musk never chooses an easy path rather he puts his focus on developing very high-quality products. You must understand that, even if you have to build a thing from scratch, do it. Do not compromise when it comes to the quality of your stuff just to save time and money. You’ll end up losing more than what you are actually trying to save.
Shortcuts don’t really do well when our sweat and blood are invested in something. It brings unexpected problems and leads to heavier losses.
8. Prioritise Your Tasks
Elon musk chooses essential things first. He believes in renewable sources of energy, especially Solar Energy, but he has a partnership with only one solar company namely SolarCity and that too he doesn’t run actively.
Similarly, you must choose important things which might suffer if you don’t prioritize them. These kinds of tiny decisions matter.
Simply don’t try to do it all without analyzing the importance of different things that you do and the amount of time and attention which they require.
9. Pay Attention to Minute Details
Elon Musk has interviewed almost all of the first one thousand hires of SpaceX and most of them have hung on for a decade or more.
Paying attention to mundane things or things that appear to be very small or insignificant. They turn out to be the most significant ones later. The most common habits of our daily lives have a huge amount of power to change our lives.
10. Art of Communicating Things
The art of communicating the right things at the right time to the right people in the right manner is the key to successful management.
When the employees of SpaceX were restless because it wasn’t going public, Elon immediately sent an email explaining every minute detail of why he was not making SpaceX public and the effect it will have on the shareholders and employees. One must know when to speak and when to stay quiet.
11. Be Fully Involved
Elon Musk gets fully involved in whatever he does. He develops a different level of interest in everything he does which makes him different from the rest of the people. One should be in it like no one else would be. This will make you the master of that one thing.

Summary

Adopting some of the work ethics of Elon Musk, who dreams about a fully functional colony on Mars can change your life in a very positive way. His success is not an accident rather it is a combination of hard work and smart work. The above-mentioned work ethics are some of the gems which can guide a person in his journey to the top.
