Carnegie, in his twenties, wrote a note that was found on his table after his death which read “I am going to spend the first half of my life accumulating money, and I am going to spend the last half of my life giving it all away.” During Carnegie’s lifetime, his fortune was around $450 million equivalent to $4.5 billion today that he gave away by building Carnegie Hall in New York City, founded libraries in small towns, and participating in many other philanthropic activities.
