The Power of Positive Thinking (Part 1)

Smile and angry emoticon
Positive thinking is not just a matter of thinking but its a matter of perceiving and its a matter of responding to external stimuli.
Two people looking out from the same window and one sees the star and others see the mud. When two people look like this then it shows the focus of their vision, energy level, and motivation. One who looks at the sky may dream, aspire and utilize his creative energy to achieve his goals but on the other hand, a person that looks at the mud might be thinking why bad things happened with me and this world is worthless. Our vision and disposition are symbiotic. What we see that shapes how we think and how we think shapes what we see.
Willie Nelson
Let us understand the importance of positive thinking with the help of a short story:
A very famous shoe company sent two salesmen to Africa to determine the market potential for their products. One of the salesmen was sent to the North of Africa, while the other salesman was sent to the south of Africa. Both of the salesmen completed a basic survey of the target market and called back to the office. The salesman who was sent to the North of Africa reported: “No one here wears any shoes, there is no market for us here!”. But the other salesman sent a message “No one here wears any shoes, there is a huge market for us, send inventory fast!”.
We can inculcate positive thinking with the help of a few tips:
1. Give up Unreasonable Expectations.
Our mind has its demands, expectations and we want the world to cater to those specific demands. Many of us unconsciously demand that – People must always like us, love us, treat us fairly they must know our needs; We are never bothered by the painful emotions that we cause to others. Let us see one picture where mother and father are quarreling, her father is trying to prove his point and his wife is having a headache.
Family issues
Children are blocking their ears. This happens when we try to superimpose our expectations on others. So we must understand that sometimes we will get what we desire and sometimes not. Hence we must not get demotivated by our unreasonable expectations. We must also learn from below mentioned quote:

One that must not be cured must be endured

2. Success is not in trophy won but in a race run.
We must understand the meaning of success. In India, more
than 3 lac students appear for the IIT JEE every year but very few got selected
for the premium IITs but it doesn't mean that others are fools. Still, so many
students commit suicide every year. People used to think that I must repeatedly
top the list and always experience the pleasure of success. This is just a foolish Idea and
we must understand that results are not in our hands but only our effort is in
our hands. So it is not the trophy won but the race run that matters.
3. Give up an Unhealthy Comparison.
When we see people who are below us we used to feel proud
and when we see people who are above us we used to feel envious. Both things
are very lethal to us. Let us understand this by one analogy:
Comfortable vacations, the enviable professional
accomplishments, the perfect children and spouses we see on our friends’
Facebook pages are just one sliver of their real lives. Yes, it’s the truth, but
not the “whole truth and nothing but the truth.” A writer may proudly announce
the publication of his new novel, but conceal the 12 rejections his manuscript
received before being published. We all may envy the smiling suntanned family
we see on a tropical vacation, although we’re not privy to the fact that the 30
seconds of smiling came after three hours of squabbling and sniping. When we
knew others’ whole truths, we might not feel so inadequate when comparing
ourselves to their carefully crafted public images of "perfection."
4. Count the blessings.
Let us understand this point by one saying “One student
said that I cried for shoes and refused to go to the school until I saw a
a person who had no legs".
Solomon Gundry's rhyme reads as follows: "Solomon
Grundy, Born on a Monday, Christened on Tuesday, Married on Wednesday, Took ill
on Thursday, Grew worse on Friday, Died on Saturday, Buried on Sunday, that was
the tale, Of Solomon Grundy." So we must understand that we have a life
span of 70-80 years which is very insignificant if we see the life span of this
universe. We must not become so worried about life that we forgot to live in the present.
By counting the blessings, our minds will always be grateful, content and free
from agitation.
We can have positive thinking by practically applying above mentioned tips. There are 4 more tips for positive thinking and those tips will be shared in my next Blog.
