SISU: The Finnish Concept of Resilience

Introduction In a world filled with challenges and setbacks, the quest for resilience has become paramount. Resilience is more than just overcoming hardship; it's about flourishing in the midst of it. And when it comes to resilience, few cultures embody it as profoundly as the Finns, who have a word for this indomitable spirit: Sisu. Sisu, pronounced "see-soo," is a unique Finnish concept that encapsulates grit, determination, and courage in the face of adversity. It's an intrinsic quality deeply embedded in the Finnish psyche, influencing how they approach life's challenges. But what exactly is Sisu, and how can we incorporate this powerful mindset into our own lives? At its core, Sisu is about perseverance in the face of extreme adversity. It's the ability to summon inner strength and tenacity when confronted with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. While resilience is a universal trait found in every culture, Sisu has distinct characteristics that set it ap

When Circumstances Are Beyond Your Control

Challenge yourself
Viktor Frankl rightly said that "When we can no longer change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves".
Let us read one of my realization for a better understanding:

On a hot sunny day when I returned to my home after an exhaustive cricket session of 6 hours, I was sweating like a crazy man. I decided to make lemonade for myself and took out some fresh lemons from the refrigerator. As I started cutting lemons I got a call from one of my best friends. While talking to my friend I poured around 5 times more lemon than what was actually required. It was so sour that it can actually bring anyone back to consciousness from the state of unconsciousness.

Somehow or the other I had to correct it now. I wanted to remove the extra lemon from my lemonade but it was impossible. Because there are some things in life that can never be undone. So there was no way to remove extra lemons from the lemonade but surely there was a way to correct that mistake. The only solution available was to add 4 more glasses of water. Now instead of 1, I have 5 glasses of fresh lemonade ready to be served to 4 more people. And I think life is exactly the same. There are several things that may have been gone wrong in our life. Some wrong decisions, wrong choices, wrong investments, wrong words that we might have spoken can never be undone. It is not like that we must not try but we must give our best to correct those mistakes. But after having done what we can and when we cannot reverse things, still keep trying is just like attempting to remove the lemon from lemonade and I think that will be a sheer waste of time. Instead, we must try to add so many right things in our lives that those wrong things will look very small. Whenever problems seem beyond our control, rather than trying to remove them we must add more positivity in our life.
“We all have been provided a set of experiences in life,”. “The experiences are neutral. They have no meaning. This is how we interpret the experiences that give them meaning. Interpretations of our experiences shape our beliefs and theories about the world which, in turn, influence the way we live our life.”

“During difficult times, our emotions run the gamut: refutation, anger, rage, despair, numbness, isolation, desperation,” according to Laura Fenamore’s Tiny Buddha post. “In order to heal, we must feel. But we all have a say in what we do with our feelings.”
Easier said than done, of course, but we must try our best.
