NM Prathap: The Drone Scientist of India

NM Prathap

Introduction

Roy T. Bennett once said, " Your hardest times often lead to the greatest moments of your life. Keep going. Tough situations build strong people in the end.” NM Prathap has proved that our hardest times make us stronger. This success story of Prathap consists of selflessness, courage, patriotism, and innovation. He had denied job offers from more than 87 countries and decided to serve his Nation. He is a true follower of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and selected the path of the country's service. He proved that a son of a farmer may not necessarily become a farmer but he can also become a scientist.

Humble Beginning

Prathap's childhood dream was to become an engineer but his father's financial condition was not good and hence he took admission to JSS Academy of higher education and research for BSc degree. He was staying in a hostel while continuing education from the college but he got a shock when hostel authorities kicked him out from the hostel due to non-payment of hostel fee. He spent a few days at Bus Stop and washed his clothes in public toilets. While facing these challenges, he never stopped learning. He learned C++, Java, and Python languages. He also started working on building drones by utilizing E-Waste. He failed for more than 80 times before building a fully functional drone and this drone was sufficient to make him eligible for any drone competition. Prathap decided to take part in the Indian Institute of Technolgy (IIT) Delhi's Drone model competition and he won second place in this competition. Organizers motivated him to take part in Japan's International Drone competition and he started preparing for the competition. But money was the biggest constraint for Prathap and he had to sell his mother's Mangalsutra for participation. He also found a sponsor who sponsored his flight tickets for Japan. In Japan, Prathap had only Rs 1500 in his pocket so he walked to the competition site. He had shown the capability of his drone during the competition but became demotivated when he had not heard his name at any position till the second last. He became elated when the organizers announced his name as a winner. He got 10,000 US Dollars as award money and that was his life's turning point.

Modi Kalam NM Prathap Drone

Patriotism

Prathap was felicitated by several Karnataka Ministers after winning International Drone Competition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally invited and congratulated him for his rare feat. He also won laurels in France, Germany, and several other developed nations. He received job offers from more than 87 countries for drone research. He was also offered a 16 lakh per month job, 5 BHK luxury home, and additional incentives but he refused everything for Mother nation. Prathap's role model is Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and he has the vision to transform India. Recently he had shown us how his drones can help us to deliver food supplies to difficult terrains. He is now working with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop Drones for Traffic management, border security, and disaster management.

Conclusion

Prathap is a true inspiration for all of us and we must learn the habit of continuous improvement (even during adverse conditions) from him. Currently, he is planning to establish a start-up where he will guide young people and build drones for defense, aviation, and other industries. He is committed to working for the benefit of the nation.
