Sushil Kumar is one of the most renowned sports personalities of India. He is a freestyle wrestler who won back-to-back individual Olympic Medals. Silver Medal at the 2012 London Olympics and Bronze Medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics are two of his most popular achievements. With his achievements, he inspired a lot of youngsters and brought glory to India. But this two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar is nowadays in news, not for his achievements but for the murder of a former junior national wrestling champion, Sagar Rana aged 23 years old.
Early Life
Sushil Kumar was not from a very well-to-do family. Rather he was born in a village in the outskirts of Delhi called Baprola village, to Diwan Singh who was a bus driver in Delhi Transport Corporation, and his wife Kamla Devi on 26 May 1983.Sushil Kumar’s cousin Sandeep was a wrestler. He got his inspiration from him to pick up wrestling. He started his training at the ‘Akhada’ located in Chhatrasal Stadium, New Delhi, at the age of 14 years. Satpal, a famous Wrestler was one of his trainers. From there, the journey of Sushil Kumar to his success began. He started participating in Junior Level Competitions and won his first tournament in 1998 where he won a Gold Medal at the World Cadet Games. He then, won Gold Medal again just two years later, at the Asian Junior Wrestling Championship. From there he emerged as a bright young wrestling talent of the country.
Achievements
Sushil Kumar’s list of his achievements is quite long. But he came into the limelight only after he won the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics. He also became the flag bearer for India at the 2012 London Olympics. Some of the most notable achievements of Sushil Kumar are:1. Silver Medal in London 2012: Sushil Kumar won gold medals in both World Championships and the Commonwealth Games leading up to the great event. He won the silver medal in 66kg freestyle after losing the finals to Japan’s Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu.
2. Bronze Medal in Beijing 2008: Sushil Kumar won a Bronze Medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics by defeating Leonid Spiridonov of Kazakhstan.
3. National Honours: He was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2005, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (Highest sporting honour in India), and Padma Shri in 2011 (the fourth-highest civilian honour in India) by the Government of India.
4. Gold Medal in World Championships in 2010: Sushil Kumar won a Gold Medal at the wrestling World Championships held in Moscow in 2010 after defeating Alan Gogaev of Russia in the 66 kg category.
5. Three Gold Medals at Commonwealth Games: The wrestler has won Three Gold Medals; First, Gold in the 66 kg freestyle in the 2010 Delhi games. Second, Gold in 74 kg freestyle defeating Qamar Abbas in the final, at the 2014 Glasgow games. Third, Gold 74 kg freestyle defeating Johannes Botha in the 2018 games in Australia.
The Delhi Police issued a lookout circular against Sushil after it came across video footage in which Kumar and others were seen assaulting Sagar Rana and his friends Sonu and Amit Kumar. Sushil Kumar fled and was hiding since 5th May 2021, when an FIR was registered against him U/S 302 IPC (Murder), 365 (Abduction), 120-B (Criminal Conspiracy) at the Model Town Police Station. On May 4, Sagar Rana who competed in the 97-kg Greco-Roman category was beaten to death on 4th May 2021, after a clash between two groups. Sushil Kumar got arrested by the Southern range of Delhi Police’s Special Cell on 23rd May 2021. Case is still under investigation.

Sushil Kumar is currently in news due to his connection in the Murder Case of 23-year-old Wrestler Sagar Rana who was a national champion in the sport. Sagar Rana was handed over to Former Wrestler Satpal, who runs Chhatrasal Akhada, at the age of 15 years.
