The Empty Boat and Young Monk

Introduction A long time ago, a young Zen monk lived in a little monastery in the forest by a small lake. The monastery was occupied by a few older monks, but the remainder were beginners who still needed to learn. The monks had numerous tasks at the monastery, but one of the most essential was their daily routine, which required them to sit down, close their eyes, and meditate. The monk struggled to focus during his meditation practice for several reasons, which irritated him. After that, I concentrated in quiet for hours at a time. After each meditation, they were to report back to their mentor on their development.  Anger of a Young Monk When the young monk reported his progress, or lack thereof, to his mentor, the senior monk asked him a simple question with a hidden lesson: "Do you know what is making you angry?" The young monk responded, "Well, normally, as soon as I close my eyes and begin to meditate, someone moves around and I lose focus. I am angry when someone

Importance of Selfless Service

Importance of Selfless Service

Introduction

Selfless service can be defined as a service performed without expecting anything in return let alone the result or award for performing it. It is generally performed for the benefit of other human beings or society. In the Hindi language, it is called Seva which means 'service'. It refers to the selfless efforts done for the welfare of all. It includes the act of a person who invests time, money or even imparts his/her skills to others. True selfless service includes helping the whole of humanity and not just your family, given freely and motivated by a strong internal desire to help others. Some people even give their own lives to save others.

There are several forms of Selfless Service. For example, even if you can’t donate, you can still help others by imparting your skills such as educating people, making them aware of their rights, giving your time to someone by listening to them carefully, or spending your time with animals, etc.
One of the best examples of selfless love is that of a Mother for her child. The mother makes all kinds of sacrifices to make the child comfortable and see him/her smile. It comes naturally from her heart. She doesn’t expect or asks for anything in return from the child.

Benefits of Selfless Service

Selfless service opens the inner gates of a human being. It not only helps the ones who receive help rather it blesses them with grace who provide that help. When we selflessly do something for others, our heart expands. We experience deeper states of meditation and our body, mind, and soul is filled with peace and joy.
Selfless service is the pathway to true greatness Martin Uzochukwu Ugwu
People who serve selflessly, have directly or indirectly, helped in improving the quality of life on earth. For ages people have worked tirelessly to discover many things, for example, medicines to cure diseases, invent machines and other equipment to make the life of the people safer and comfortable. Many others have sacrificed their lives fighting for the rights and freedom of the others like Mother Teresa, Florence Nightingale, etc., who spent their lives working for preserving peace and reducing the pain of mankind. The world honours their work with awards and recognition. They have taken an eternal place of love and respect in the memory of mankind.
Selfless Service helps you to become a better human being with great inner peace and fills you with gratitude. In today’s era with lots of stress and pressure, a person becomes extremely unhappy, dissatisfied, and depressed but in reality, happiness is a journey, not a destination. When you are doing selfless service, you are actually taking out time for yourself too. It not only heals the other person rather it heals you too.

What can we do?

All of us, be it together or individually, in our own sphere can use our skills, talents, and our knowledge selflessly to make the world a better place for all living beings. People become selfless servants of mankind only when they have evolved to the highest level of existence. Anyone can practice it by simple acts of feeding hungry, helping animals, educating an illiterate, etc. But only if it is done without the intention of personal gain, it will bring you joy and happiness. Hence, one should engage in service selflessly which means, helping people only out of compassion and without even a single conscious thought of personal benefit.
