Book Review: How to Journal for Beginners by Robert Ransom What sets this book apart is its gentle encouragement. Ransom speaks directly to beginners, addressing the fears and doubts that often hold people back. He dismantles the myth that journaling is only for those with artistic talent or profound thoughts, reminding readers that every word they write has value. His message is simple but powerful: journaling isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being authentic. Ransom’s approach is refreshingly practical. He does...
Born in Goa on 13 Dec 1955, Mr. Parrikar had done Engineering from IIT Bombay and he was a batchmate of Mr. Nandan Nilekani. He entered politics to uplift the downtrodden common man. Below are the life-changing lessons from the life of Mr. Manohar Parrikar.
1. Duty is always first: In 1999 he lost his wife Medha who died because of cancer. Just after 1 month, he had taken oath as the first BJP CM of Goa.
Let's read the realization of Dr. Jagannath (Doctor who treated Sh Parrikar): He was never out of touch with the affairs of the state. In spite of being in the hospital, he ran a full day of office work with his staff in the hospital. When I went to New York to meet him, I saw a similar arrangement of his getting information and passing the necessary instructions back to Goa.
Many times we used to take leaves from the office by giving lame excuses like I had pain in my hand, head, etc. Here is an example of a man who is lying on his deathbed but still fulfilling his duties.
4. Always go into details: According to Mr. Sujith Haridas (Member of a Committee on Defence Procurement Procedure set up by Mr. Parrikar): He used to remember the name of entrepreneurs - small or large scale. During one such interaction in Delhi, when one entrepreneur from Lucknow stood up to ask a question, Mr. Parrikar interfered and recalled that the entrepreneur had sent him a representation six months ago and he replied asking for more details. He asked the entrepreneur to send the details at the earliest so that he could take the necessary action! This was not a one-off incident, such experiences were common during such interactions".
He used to explain to each industrialist about the status of their respective projects and why delays were happening on technical grounds himself. He was hands-on. He knew exactly the status of each project. This was the benefit of getting all the necessary details. This was also a reason for his success as a leader. In Corporate life, we must also go into details of each and every project we are handling and don't just delegate to our juniors. As we will gain a grip over the project our juniors will develop respect for us and will give their best for the project.
5. Fight with adversities:
I saw many with the courage to face adversity,
I saw some with the courage to face the inevitable outcome
I saw only him with the courage to smile in the face of inevitable
These were the words of Dr. Jagannath (Doctor who treated Sh Parrikar). He further revealed that not once Sh Parrikar had shown disappointment or pain. He was not like other patients who used to ask God: Why? Why me? Why God is so unkind? Parrikar, on the other hand, accepted the challenge and said, " I will never give up. Until the last day, I will spend in public service.
In Corporate life, we used to give up so easily. People used to change their jobs due to bosses, they used to take leaves when they see tough situations. We must learn from the life of Sh Parrikar and that will a true homage to him.

2. Down to earth attitude: He always used to dress in his trademark clothing i.e., Casual shirt-Trouser--floaters. Mr. Parrikar always cultivated an image of a common man's CM. He had so many achievements (both academically and professionally) after him but he never boasted of his achievements. And this was the actual reason why he had achieved so many things continuously as he had never taken pride.
3. Fast decision-maker: According to Mr. Sujith Haridas (Member of a Committee on Defence Procurement Procedure set up by Mr Parrikar): "The contributions made by Mr. Parrikar towards building a strong Defence Industry in the country will always be remembered. All major reforms in the Defence Industry sector happened during Mr. Parrikar’s tenure after a long gap since Mr. George Fernandes initiated the reforms in the late ’90s. Mr. Parrikar soon after taking over as the Defence Minister literally mastered the technicalities of the defense procurement system and had taken several pro-industry initiatives to support the Indian Industry". The issue of OROP (One rank one pension) was also solved in his tenure. He was also a man behind surgical strikes in PoK and Myanmar. This was the first surgical strike of India on any other nation. In Corporate life, we must learn this technique from him. We must not show our back to the tough decision but we must face them head-on. 4.
