Book Review: How to Journal for Beginners by Robert Ransom What sets this book apart is its gentle encouragement. Ransom speaks directly to beginners, addressing the fears and doubts that often hold people back. He dismantles the myth that journaling is only for those with artistic talent or profound thoughts, reminding readers that every word they write has value. His message is simple but powerful: journaling isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being authentic. Ransom’s approach is refreshingly practical. He does...
ISRO's plan to soft-land Chandrayaan's Vikram lander on the south pole of the moon failed at the terminal stage of the project. This is not the first failure of the organization and definitely not the last one also. There are several learnings from the failure of ISRO. We also used to face failure when success seems very near. We used to get disappointed due to those failures and just stop working towards success. There's also a great story " Three feet from Gold" and you can read it here. It very neatly explains how we stop trying after temporary failures and miss our goal just by three feet.
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam explained how he faced failure in 1979 and how he learned to fight failures by that particular incident. He was a mission director of the Satellite Launch Vehicle project at ISRO. His mission was to put the vehicle into the orbit. Thousands of scientists worked for the project for more than 10 years. At the launch site in Sriharikota, the time was ticking and suddenly the computer showed some fault of fuel leakage in the rocket. The team of 6 scientists suggested that there was enough fuel to launch the vehicle but some suggested that they should postpone the launch.Dr. Abdul kalam took a decision to launch the rocket but the rocket which was meant to put a satellite into an orbit pushed it into the Bay of Bengal. That was the first time Dr. Kalam had faced the failure. He explained how managing success is easy but managing failure is too difficult.
After the failure, Mr. Satish Dhawan (ISRO chairman) took him to the press conference. There were several media personalities present at the meeting. Dr. Kalam was thinking that blame will come to him as he was the mission director. But to his surprise, Mr. Dhawan announced that he is taking the blame for failure and supported his technologists and scientists. Media people blamed him for wasting several crores but he answered that his team will achieve success next year. Next year when ISRO achieved success in launching the vehicle into the orbit, Mr. Dhawan told Kalam to take a press conference. This is called a great leadership and we all must learn from this incident from the life of Dr. Kalam.
In the 1990s the USA denied Cryogenic technology (It involves the use of rocket propellants at extremely low temperatures) but ISRO scientists developed this technology in India.ISRO successfully launched the Mangalyaan project and also launched 100+ satellites at one time. Those were the successes of ISRO scientists. India is with ISRO scientists and we will definitely bounce back.
Let's see how our Prime Minister pacified ISRO chairman, Dr. Kailasavadivoo Sivan, by breaking all protocols.
