She is a shark attack survivor, one of the top-notch surfer of the world and a mother of two. Yes, we are talking about Bethani Hamilton, a girl who lost her hand at the age of thirteen but due to her hard work and diligent consistency she became a surfing champion. In one of the interviews that happened just a few months after the shark attack, the interviewer asked, " Will you surf again ?". And with great optimism she answered that " I think, I know". Her words uttered sheer confidence that she will definitely surf again with only one hand.
Its rightly said that "A good attitude opens the door to high achievement, which means you then have a better attitude, getting you into a good circle of learning". She had that positive attitude since the beginning and see how far she came now. Let's go through her story now. On October 31, 2003, Bethany who was aged 13 at the time of the incident. She went for a morning surf along the Beach, Kauai, with her best friend Alana, Alana's father and brother, Holt, and Byron. Suddenly 14 feet long tiger shark attacked her, severing her left arm completely. By the time she had reached the hospital, she already lost more than 60% of her blood. She not only survived the trauma of her hand's loss but also fought against all odds of coming back to surfing again.
There's a very important analogy by which we can understand the importance of challenging the status quo. When a frog is kept in a pan with hot water then it will definitely jump out of the pan immediately but if we keep it in a pan of normal water and keep boiling the water slowly. The frog will adapt to the temperature of the warm water and the time will come when the temperature will become too high but the frog will not try to come out of the pan and lose its life. Many times in our life, we used to accept mediocre things but we must keep this analogy in mind and always try to challenge the status quo. Bethany was the victim of the shark attack and lost her hand, she might have thought that now I am a victim and let me spend my life in agony. But she accepted to challenge the situation and started practicing surfing again.
Since the attack, she appeared as a guest on many television shows. Her manager, Roy "Dutch" Hofstetter, managed her rise through the media from shark attack victim to inspirational role model. She worked in television shows like The Biggest Loser, 20/20, Good Morning America, Inside Edition, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Today Show, The Tonight Show, and Dude Perfect, as well as in magazines like People, Time, and American Girl. She is a true inspiration for all of us and we learn Never give up attitude from her. She is just like Károly Takács who had risen against all odds in his life and became a true champion.
